‘Hobart, I love you’ is a Hobart-only play with three captivating love stories performed by six gifted actors from an award-winning multicultural theatre group.

The director and actor, Fini Liu received the Best Direction Nomination’ by Greenroom Australia for ‘Juleo and Romiet’ presented as part of Melbourne Fringe Festival 2022; the ‘Best Work by an Emerging Artist’ in Melbourne Fringe Festival 2022’ for ‘Juleo and Romiet’, and the Anywhere Festival Award Overall in Anywhere Festival 2022 for ‘Last Laugh’.

‘Hobart, I love you’ is a semi-original theatre work, adapted from three classical love stories.

These three love stories will take place in contemporary Hobart, exploring love, freedom, growth and loneliness.

This play invites the audience to experience contemporary Hobart through the lens of multicultural communities.

Story 1: They go through the cycles of seeking, encountering,  arguing, reconciling, and separating, repeatedly oscillating between avoiding and confronting, choosing and giving up, desires and realities, ultimately falling into and breaking free from the shackles of human nature.

Story 2: They become attracted to each other, like butterflies fluttering freely in a sunlit meadow, their spirits entwined, embracing a love that grants them the freedom to soar to unimaginable heights. 
Actors: Yuyang Peng and Sally Chen

Story 3: They sit side by side at tables and read the notes, letters and cards – in which over nearly 50 years, they discuss their hopes and ambitions, dreams and disappointments, victories and defeats.

An afternoon of fairy tale, song and comedy.

An afternoon of songs drawn from different cultures and dramatic adaptations of stories from Germany and Ancient Rome.

The content is suitable for children of all ages from 6 to 90 and is drawn from the world of imagination.

Performed by graduating students of the two year Grail Quest foundation course based on Rudolf Steiner’s spiritual science, working out of Tarremah Steiner School.

These shorts are fresh from their premieres in competition at Flickerfest Bondi, giving audiences a taste of the hottest shorts from home and across the world.

Celebrating 32 years in 2023 Flickerfest remains Australia’s leading Academy® Qualifying and BAFTA Recognised short film festival, ensuring that we continue to present A-list short film programmes recognised amongst the best in the world with films hand-picked from the festival’s record 3,200 entries!

Flickerfest, Australia’s largest Short Film Festival is excited to be returning on its National Tour to be showcasing the Best of International Shorts and Best of Australian Shorts programme highlights, all handpicked from our recent Bondi festival competitions.

The short films screening are all entertaining, inspiring, award-winning and fresh from their premieres in competition at Flickerfest Bondi, giving Hobart Flickerfest audiences a window into the hottest contemporary shorts from at home and across the world today.

On Friday 14th July 8pm enjoy an incredible collection of global stories, as you take a trip around the world from the comfort of your cinema chair with the Best of International Shorts. Amongst a host of international highlights enjoying their Australian premieres are the stunning Danish drama ‘IVALU’ that follows the intimate story of an inuit family in the vast landscapes of Greenland and the delightful and surprising Canadian animation, ‘The Flying Sailor’, by a power duo of Female canadian animators, both films were recently nominated for an Oscar.

The Best of Australian Shorts programme, screening on Saturday 15th July, 8pm  shines a spotlight on the incredible short film talent that exists in our emerging Australian industry, with a host of Australian stories honoring our unique identity and culture.

Highlights include Tassie films, fresh from their Flickerfest premieres, by talented creatives who grew up in Tassie and films shot across the state. The moving drama ‘Game Face, by writer/director Gillian Crosby, who grew up in Hobart, is co-written with her mum, based on her mum’s experiences of a confidence workshop for cancer patients where a woman gains a fresh perspective from a colorful group of characters. Fun coming of age story ‘Pulsar’, by Hobart born and raised Gabriele Morrison is shot in Primrose Sands and doesn’t stray too far from the truth of some experiences Gabriele had growing up in Hobart in the early 2000’s. Director Danielle Baynes, who was awarded the BRUNY20 Artist Fellowship, shot her short film ‘Ghost Gear’ on Bruny Island,  utilizing local cast, crew and the stunning landscape, this dramatic story follows two fractured parents and their adventurous 8-year-old are haunted by a surprising discovery on a family holiday.

Our Tassie Flickerfest films screen alongside other Australian highlights, including 2023 Award winners, the colourful and insightful Torres Strait cultural drama ‘Katele’ (Mudskipper), about a woman longing for her island home, which won the Best Australian Short Film Award at Flickerfest 2023, shining alongside the winner of Flickerfest’s Best Australian Animation ‘Teacups’, based on the moving true story of a man whose compassion and ability to listen over cups of tea saved many lives and don’t miss ‘An Ostrich Told Me the World is Fake and I Think I Believe It,’ a delightfully quirky story of a toaster phone salesman whose world is turned upside down after the visit of a mysterious stranger, recently nominated for an Oscar for Best Short Animation.

Members of the Hobart Wind Symphony, directed by Simon Reade, celebrate the great diversity of Australian chamber music written for winds, brass and percussion including the title work for the concert, Interactions, by Don Kay.

This concert features Australian works by 8 composers, with a particular focus on the works of Don Kay in his 90th year.  

Simon Reade directs members of the Hobart Wind Symphony in chamber works by Simon Barber, Holly Caldwell, Sacha Flores, Karlin Greenstreet-Love, Russell Gilmour, Don Kay, Simon Reade, Peter Sculthorpe and Helen Wanders, including four world premieres.

A swinging evening of great jazz classics from Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong featuring Tamara Kuldin, Paul Coyle, Matt Boden, Damien Kingston, Hamish Houston, and Tom Robb.

Acclaimed Australian jazz vocalist Tamara Kuldin and renowned trumpet player and vocalist Paul Coyle take to the stage to honour the First Lady of Song Ella Fitzgerald and innovative performer Louis ‘Satchmo’ Armstrong, in their special tribute ‘Cheek to Cheek’.

Enchanted by the sass and sophistication of the golden age

and era of song, Tamara Kuldin has been captivating audiences from Melbourne to Europe with a playful yet sultry twist on vintage jazz and blues. Paul Coyle is known for his dynamic stage presence and eclectic approach to music. Tamara and Paul will be joined by some of Tasmania’s finest jazz musicians, including Matt Boden, Damien Kingston, Hamish Houston, and Tom Robb,

Tamara Kuldin and her love for storytelling through song has seen her perform for audiences large and small, fronting a Jazz Orchestra at the Arts Centre or playing one of Australia’s intimate jazz clubs. Tamara’s unique and versatile vocal styling has been enjoyed at many different festivals and venues globally, from the Melbourne International Jazz Festival, Melbourne Recital Centre, Paris to Provence festival and many more.

Recognised with 2 Aria Awards, Paul Coyle’s affinity for both Reggae and Indigenous rock has led him to share the stage and record with numerous pop acts including Little Birdy, Kate Cebrano, Tina Arena, and Sheppard. Coyle is known for his ever charismatic and sensational trumpet playing and is an active member of the Australian music scene.

‘Cheek to Cheek’ is an extra sweet melodic treat, bringing its audience a night of timeless tunes and delightful standards from the Great American Songbook. The inspired collaboration at the Founder’s Room will be a swingin’ joy to behold!

Self-made millionaires, comfortably middle-aged Ed and Sadie meet Martin and Chloe – he a struggling conceptual artist and she a wannabe writer – on a thousand-dollar-a-night resort in the tropics and instantly hit it off.

This unlikely friendship develops over drunken conversations about moralistic values and social integrities. Effervescent conversations are lined with pure envy: money and security vs. youth and vibrancy.

These self-obsessed characters expose the tedium of a life of consumerism, the narcissism of contemporary values, the emptiness of the commodification of art, the guilt that seems hard-wired into middle-class parenting, and the poisonous nature of nostalgia.
