Recently returned from touring in UK and EU, Finn Rees puts together a full ensemble for this special one-off show playing music from his debut album Dawn Is A Melody

Finn Rees is a well loved Tasmanian born, Melbourne/Naarm based keyboardist, composer and producer who has built up an eclectic reputation for his music work both down under and internationally over the last decade. He has a knack for capturing emotions and intriguing minds, whatever medium he chooses and can be seen performing and collaborating in some of the most forward thinking projects such as 30/70, Close Counters, Allysha Joy, Audrey Powne and more. Drawn to jazz from a young age his influences come from some of the most inventive jazz artists such as Alice Coletrane, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea or Brazilian legends Arthur Verocai, Cesar Camargo Mariano or Azymuth.

His debut record Dawn Is A Melody is out on tastemaker label Mr Bongo records with a fast-growing hype internationally. This much anticipated venture into his solo work explores a new synergy between modal and spiritual jazz, psychedelic soul, lush orchestral arrangements and heartfelt piano and features some of Melbourne’s finest musicians. It’s been nominated for best jazz album at Music Victoria awards, featured as Jazz Album of the week on JazzFM UK and French radio FIP, as well as support from Gilles Peterson on Worldwide FM, BBC London with Robert Elms as well as 4 stars from MOJO magazine.

This special Tassie show is a rare opportunity to experience the music in its fullest, brought to life by a vibrant and uplifting 12 piece mini orchestra. Rees’s true character shines through his compositions with real sensitivity, energy and playfulness felt in every note. Bringing it back to where it all started. Not to be missed.

Salamanca Jazz’ is Live in the Founders Room on Woobys Lane, with
the Konrad Park Quint-tet

Saturday 19th October 2024
Doors & bar open at 7pm
Music from 7:30pm

The Founders Room on Woobys Lane
Salamanca Arts Centre

~~~~~
Timing is everything.
This new quintet lead by Konrad Park, has the hallmark of the great quintets as they developed in the seventies through to the mid-eighties. A ferocious dynamic range, extremes of emotion from pure melody to epic modal abstractions.
Expanding on Konrad’s recent musical ventures, this quintet reflects the largeness of sound, typical of the great quintets from this time.
The personnel in the band, having reached critical points in their careers, find themselves reaching for the big quintet sound. This exciting repertoire includes material from the VSOP Quintet, early Wynton Marsalis, Jaki Byard and many more.
Noticeably Joshua Ford-King (trumpet) has been developing his sound of recent years and it is now time to unleash the beast, as he has recently done with his own quintet.
JFK, having seen the Lincoln Centre Jazz Orchestra last year, came away with a belly full of world class music. He has been reflecting this influence in his live performances ever since.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Pianist Dan Sulzberger has long demonstrated a command over any style of modern improvised music. He brings joy and an ability to tackle this demanding harmonic landscape.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hamish Houston provides the drive and physical momentum required from the bass role; his playing is surpassed only by his commitment to jazz music.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Al Dobson
 reflects the lyricism of many great saxophonists, allowing this quintet to take full flight through the experience and conviction of his musical voice.

For her Australian tour, jazz vocalist Hetty Kate (Paris-based) shares a masterful evening of classics and curios from the American Songbook and beyond.

Returning to beautiful Hobart for her 2024 Australian tour, Hetty’s delighted to be performing in trio. She’ll be sharing the stage with wonderful musicians and friends, Matt Boden (piano) and Hamish Houston (double bass).

“(Hetty Kate) has a stage presence only matched by the clarity of her voice”
– James Morrison AU

“Beautiful, enchanting. A big future ahead..”
– Christian Bragg, Jazz FM UK

“Her vocal line is poised and her phrasing is precise, on point”
– Alain Thomas, Couleurs Jazz Magazine FR

Based in Paris since 2017, British/Australian vocalist Hetty Kate came up in the vibrant Melbourne jazz scene, mentored by some of Australia’s most treasured jazz musicians. Alongside with her ‘natural musicality’, clear tone and impeccable timing you’ll find it’s her warmth and razor-sharp wit that truly sets her apart, artfully blending poise and humour with a great love for the music. A raconteur, and often described as ‘The Real Deal’.

Hetty has been touring internationally for almost two decades, gracing stages large and small from New Zealand to New York and Paris to Prague. She has toured and recorded with Australian jazz luminary James Morrison, performed with Rick Margitza and Peter Bernstein, as well as classical pianists Simon Tedeschi (AU) and Charl de Plessis (SA). She performed as Ava Gardner for an original musical written by Eric McCusker (Mondo Rock), was the featured vocalist in James Morrison’s award winning symphonic concert ‘The A to Z of Jazz’, and played herself in Herve Hadmar’s tele-series ‘Romance’ on France2.

Enjoy a masterful evening of classics and curiosities from Dameron to Brubeck and Porter to Kern; the American Songbook and beyond.
